Angola
Clean, piped water is prohibitively expensive for many Angolan families, forcing them to rely on water from unprotected sources like rivers and streams, which, along with poor sanitation, contributes to nearly 90 percent of deaths from diarrhea in the country. Since beginning operations in Angola in 2006, Living Water International has completed more than 115 water projects, primarily in remote areas of the Cuenene province near the city of Ondjiva.

Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso is one of Living Water International's newest country programs. The country has an abundance of valuable water sources, but most pumps are either in some state of disrepair or altogether non-functioning. The most cost-effective and efficient way for Living Water International to affect change for Burkina Faso's thirsty is to rehabilitate these water sources: replacing hand pumps, repairing broken parts, sealing open wells—doing whatever is necessary to restore clean water to the people who need it most.

Burundi
Many years of conflict decimated health infrastructure in Burundi. Infant and maternal mortality rates are among the worst in Africa. In 2004, the country recorded 8,200 deaths from diarrhea. Improvements in the water and sanitation sectors are vital to Burundi’s ability to achieve its 2015 Millennium Development Goals. Living Water International began setting up a new operation in Burundi in 2010, and 20 new wells and 10 well rehabilitations are forecasted for 2011.

Central African Republic
More than a decade of armed conflict coupled with widespread violence in the northern regions of the country has left many of the nation’s already insufficient wells unusable. Living Water International began drilling in Western CAR after becoming aware of the immense need for clean water in the area. While drilling new wells, teams have identified hundreds of broken hand pumps and open wells that have been incapacitated by overuse, vandalism, or war—resulting in villages that have wells, but no clean water.

Living Water International began work in El Salvador in March of 1999 after hurricane Mitch struck the coast, leaving thousands displaced and without access to clean water. Since then, more than 325 water projects have been completed. Headquartered in Acajutla, Living Water El Salvador serves communities all along the country’s Pacific coast, using mission teams to complete most of our water projects here.

Ghana
Although 80 percent of Ghana’s population has access to an improved water source, this statistic masks stark inequalities between rural and urban areas. One third of rural populations lack access to safe drinking water. Since 1998, Living Water International has operated throughout Ghana, from the northern regions near Tamale all the way to the southern Volta region and the coast, successfully completing more than 310 water projects for Ghanaian villages, orphanages, and hospitals.

Haiti
In Haiti, contaminated water is the leading cause of infant mortality and illness in children. Before the January 2010 earthquake, the water and sanitation infrastructure in Haiti was tenuous at best. Now, conditions are much worse. Hundreds of broken wells are being rehabilitated each year by our implementers in the Cap Haitian area and in Léogâne. Living Water has established a new base of operations in the Port-au-Prince area with a renewed focus on long-term rehabilitation and maintenance plans to help those affected by the earthquake.

After starting work in North India in 2000, an office was established in 2003 and new operations were launched in the south and the east in 2007. Living Water India has completed more than 880 water projects throughout these regions, most in collaboration with local churches, schools, and hospitals.

Contaminated hand dug wells only a few feet beneath the earth’s surface are prevalent in rural areas of Mexico. Water and sanitation-related diseases, predominantly diarrhea, are major causes of death in many areas, particularly in children under the age of five. Since beginning operations in Northern Mexico in 2003, Living Water Mexico has expanded into Central, Southeast, and Southern Mexico, providing sustainable water solutions for remote communities that are often too small or inaccessible to receive attention from the government.

With over 75 rivers, 32 lagoons, and two lakes, fifteen percent of Nicaragua’s surface is water. Still, more than 20 percent of Nicaraguans lack access to a source of clean, safe water, and more than half do not have access to adequate sanitation services. Living Water International has been drilling wells along the Pacific coast of Nicaragua since 2001. Rwanda
While 35 percent of Rwanda’s population lacks access to an improved water source, the country has numerous rivers and streams as well as tremendous potential for developing groundwater resources. Villagers in many areas are forced to walk several miles to the nearest source of water—contaminated water from a swamp, stream, or open well. For these desperate communities, Living Water International offers hope. Since beginning operations in Rwanda in 2007, Living Water has completed more than 195 water projects there.

In Tanzania, basic water and sanitation services are limited, with less than half of the population having access to a latrine. It is estimated that women and children spend over two hours a day collecting water, most often from contaminated sources like rivers and open hand dug wells. Living Water began working in Tanzania in 1998, when members of our staff set out to drill wells for Tanzanian tribespeople in the arid northern region of the country.
